How many tiles are in a box?

Between 4 and 44 tiles, covering roughly 5 to 20 square feet. It depends entirely on the tile size and the brand — which is why the carton, not the showroom sample, is the number to trust.

Tile is sold by the box because loose tile chips at the edges and is slow to count at a checkout. That is fine for the retailer and mildly annoying for you, because the box is not a standard unit. Two boxes of "12 × 24 porcelain" from two brands can differ by four square feet.

Why the box count varies

Boxes are filled to a target weight, not a target area. Porcelain is denser than ceramic, and large format tile is heavy per piece — a 24 × 24 inch porcelain tile weighs around 16 lb. Four of those is 64 lb, which is already near the limit for comfortable handling, so four per box becomes the practical answer regardless of what the maths says.

The other variable is the pallet. Manufacturers optimise how many boxes fit on a pallet for shipping, which occasionally pushes a box from 10 pieces to 11. Neither decision has anything to do with your room.

Where to find the real number

Turning square footage into boxes

The order of operations matters more than the arithmetic. Work in this sequence and you will not over-buy:

  1. Measure the room: length × width = square feet.
  2. Subtract only permanent fixtures (tub, shower, built-in island). Leave vanities and toilets in the measurement.
  3. Add waste: 10% straight lay, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone.
  4. Divide by coverage per box from the carton.
  5. Round up to a whole box — this is the only place you round.
  6. Add one extra box, unopened, for future repairs.

Example: a 10 × 12 ft room is 120 sq ft. With 10% waste that is 132 sq ft. A box covering 12 sq ft gives 11 boxes exactly, plus one spare is 12. The tile calculator runs the same sequence and shows the intermediate numbers.

Common mistakes when buying by the box

  1. Dividing before adding waste. 120 ÷ 12 = 10 boxes looks tidy, but the room needs 11 before you even account for a spare.
  2. Rounding down. 10.2 boxes is 11 boxes. There is no such thing as 0.2 of a box, and the store will not sell you one.
  3. Assuming all boxes match. Check the lot number on each carton. Mixed lots can be a shade apart, which is invisible on a pallet and obvious on a floor.
  4. Opening the spare. Once a box is open, it is usually non-returnable. Leave one sealed until you actually need it.
  5. Buying the last boxes on the shelf. If the pallet is nearly empty, order the remainder — those are the boxes that have been handled and dropped the most.

What about grout and thinset?

Neither comes in the tile box. Budget a 50 lb bag of thinset per 60–95 sq ft (it varies with trowel size and tile format) and a 25 lb bag of grout per 100–150 sq ft at a 1/8 inch joint. Small tiles with wide joints use dramatically more grout — a mosaic floor can need three times the grout of a large-format floor of the same area.

Frequently asked questions

How many 12x12 tiles are in a box?

Usually 10 to 15. Because each 12x12 tile is exactly 1 sq ft, a box covers 10–15 sq ft. Always read the carton: the same size from different brands can come 10, 11, 12 or 15 to a box.

How many square feet does a box of tile cover?

Most boxes cover between 5 and 20 sq ft. Wall tile and mosaics sit at the low end (5–11 sq ft), 12x24 floor tile at 12–16 sq ft, and large format 24x24 at around 16 sq ft. The coverage is printed on the carton and on the product page.

Can I buy single tiles instead of a whole box?

Some stores sell loose tile as "each" or by the piece, but most flooring tile is sold only by the full box. If you are one tile short, ask whether the store has an open box or a sample piece — buying a second box from a different lot is the last resort.

How do I calculate how many boxes of tile to buy?

Multiply room length by width to get square feet, add 10% waste, then divide by the coverage per box and round up. For example: 10x12 room = 120 sq ft, plus 10% = 132 sq ft, divided by 12 sq ft per box = 11 boxes.

Why does the number of tiles per box change between brands?

Boxes are filled by weight and by pallet dimensions, not by square footage. A denser porcelain tile weighs more per piece, so fewer fit in a box within the handling limit. Manufacturers then print whatever coverage the box happens to contain.
