How much does mulch cost?

Bulk mulch costs $30–$45 per cubic yard in 2026, and a 2 cu ft bag costs $3–$6. Installed by a landscaper, expect $60–$110 per cubic yard — or roughly $0.60–$1.00 per square foot at the standard 3 inch depth.

Mulch pricing is confusing because the same product is sold in three units: by the cubic yard in bulk, by the bag at a garden centre, and by the square foot when a landscaper quotes the job. The material itself is cheap — often less than $50 for a pile that fills a pickup bed. The rest of the bill is delivery, labour and the minimum charge that comes with sending a crew and a truck.

Mulch prices by type

Material Bulk, per cu yd Bagged, per 2 cu ft Best for
Shredded hardwood$30–$45$3–$4.50General beds, slopes, good weed control
Dyed black or red$35–$55$4–$6High-contrast beds, modern landscaping
Pine bark nuggets$32–$50$4–$6Long-lasting beds, acid-loving plants
Cedar$40–$60$5–$8Natural insect resistance, strong scent
Compost$25–$40$3–$5Soil improvement, vegetable beds
Straw$15–$30$5–$9 per baleNew seed, temporary cover
Rubber$80–$120$8–$12Play areas, low-maintenance paths

Dyed mulch costs more because of the colouring process, not because it works better. Rubber mulch is the outlier: it is expensive up front but lasts 10 years or more, which is why it shows up under playgrounds rather than in flower beds.

Cost by project size

Area at 3 in deep Mulch needed Bulk Bagged (2 cu ft)
100 sq ft1 cu yd$30–$45$40–$85
288 sq ft (12 × 24 ft)3 cu yd$90–$135$125–$245
500 sq ft5 cu yd$150–$225$205–$410
1,000 sq ft10 cu yd$300–$450$405–$810
2,000 sq ft19 cu yd$570–$855$770–$1,540

Delivery fees

Order size Delivery Notes
1–3 cu yd$50–$90Often the same as bagging it yourself
4–10 cu yd$75–$120Standard dump truck or trailer
10–20 cu yd$100–$175Tandem axle, may need a wide access
Over 20 cu yd$150–$300Multiple loads, priced per trip

Delivery is where small orders lose. A single cubic yard of mulch at $40 plus $70 delivery costs more per yard than a 3 yard load delivered for $90. If you are close to a landscape supply yard and have a trailer, collecting it yourself removes the fee entirely — just check the load rating of the trailer, because a cubic yard of wet mulch is close to half a ton.

Ask where the truck will dump before you order. A 10 yard pile has to land on a hard surface within reach of the bed, or you will spend a weekend moving it by wheelbarrow. Some suppliers charge extra to place loads precisely with a conveyor truck.

Installed cost: DIY vs professional

Spreading mulch is one of the few landscaping jobs that is genuinely DIY-friendly: no tools, no curing, no permit. The trade-off is time — roughly one cubic yard per hour by wheelbarrow, more if the pile is far from the bed.

Approach Cost per cu yd What it includes
Bulk, you spread it$30–$45 + deliveryMaterial only
Bags, you spread them$55–$80Material only, no delivery
Landscaper installs$60–$110Material, delivery, spreading, light edging
Full bed refresh$90–$150Adds weeding, edging and disposal of old mulch

Most landscapers have a minimum job charge of $200–$400, so a single small bed is rarely worth hiring out. Where a crew earns its money is on large properties, steep slopes and jobs that need weeding and edging first — the prep is usually more work than the mulch.

How to spend less

  1. Top up instead of replacing. If the existing layer is still an inch deep, add 1 inch, not 3. That is a third of the material.
  2. Order in bulk with a neighbour. A shared 10 yard delivery splits the fee and usually gets a better per-yard price.
  3. Skip the dye. Natural shredded hardwood is $10–$15 cheaper per yard than dyed and fades to grey within a season either way.
  4. Use compost where it earns its keep. Compost is cheaper than bark and feeds the soil, but it breaks down faster and needs topping up more often.
  5. Buy in spring, not at the peak. Bulk prices move with supply; late summer and autumn are usually the softest.

Whatever you choose, get the depth right before you order. Over-mulching is one of the most common ways to damage plants, and it costs more than doing it properly — see how deep mulch should be. If you are also redoing a path or driveway, the gravel cost guide covers the other bulk material priced by the ton.

Estimate scope and price checks

These are broad US planning ranges, not a local supplier quote. Bulk price, bag price, delivery minimums, material type, moisture and spreading labour vary by market. Ask suppliers to quote the same mulch type and delivered quantity, and confirm where the pile will be placed. Use the landscaping calculator to estimate cubic yards and bags, and the mulch depth guide to choose a target depth before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cubic yard of mulch cost?

Bulk mulch costs $30–$45 per cubic yard for shredded hardwood or dyed bark in most US markets in 2026, and $40–$60 for cedar or pine bark. Delivery adds $50–$150 depending on distance and load size.

Is bagged or bulk mulch cheaper?

Bulk is cheaper above about half a cubic yard. A cubic yard in 2 cu ft bags costs $40–$80, against $30–$45 for the same yard in bulk. Below half a yard, bags win because the delivery fee and minimum order cost more than the saving.

How much does mulch cost per square foot?

Material alone is about $0.28–$0.42 per sq ft at 3 inches deep, because a cubic yard covers 108 sq ft. Installed — delivered, spread and edged — expect $0.60–$1.00 per sq ft, with a minimum job charge of $200–$400.

How much does it cost to mulch a 1,000 sq ft yard?

At 3 inches deep, 1,000 sq ft needs 9.26 cubic yards, so order 10. That is $300–$450 in bulk material plus $50–$150 delivery, or $405–$810 in bags. Installed by a landscaper it runs $600–$1,000.

Does mulch cost more every year?

You only need a 1–2 inch top-up on existing beds, which is a third to half the material of a first application. Budget roughly 40% of the original cost each year, and skip the year entirely if the existing layer is still 2 inches deep.

These figures are HomiePlan planning ranges, not a live quote or a price survey. We compare published national cost guidance with the project scope described above, then show material, labour, delivery and preparation separately where the guide supports that split.
